Music & Gender
“Eenie Meenie” by Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber for now is my go to song, it is my first song I will play when I get in my car or just ever listen to music. There’s nothing really special about it, it just gets me in a really good mood. It’s a song I can easily dance and jump up and down to. I think the lyrics are a little funny. Like “she’s indecisive, she can’t decide.” That’s what indecisive means lol. It’s just a fun song that can change your mood in any second. I love listening to it before I compete to just put me in a pumped up mood.
“Say I Won’t” by Mercy Me is a pop Christian song, so not many people would know it. I didn’t discover this song till last year, but it reminds me a lot about my history throughout my life. I was a gymnast of 15 years before college. Sadly gymnastics is the sport that has the most mental and sexual abuse cases from coaches than any other sport. Luckily I wasn’t sexually abused by my coaches but I was mentally abused, and I never came out about it until I turned 18 and after I graduated. One of the biggest things that I remember them saying to me was my freshman year, they said I wasn’t good enough for college. Well here I am at the #7 school in the country, #2 in the Conference Carolinas and the best team at Converse. They also called me an embarrassment to the team a few days before the first competition of my senior season. I ended up having the best scores out of my team at the first meet and ended up being MVP of the season. The song says “Say I won’t,” my coaches doubted me and I proved them wrong. I wish it never got to that point where it hurts me to this day and makes it hard to communicate to my new coach, but say I won’t and I will.
“Me and You” by Coco Jones and Tyler Williams from the Disney movie “Let It Shine.” I don’t really relate to it and if you have watched the movie then you would understand that Roxie was also the problem because she automatically assumed that Truth was the other guy just because of how he looked. So I don’t see why she had to be all dramatic and run away and go back to LA. But it is a good song and song you can sing with your friends in the car
