Music and Genders
As a woman, we notice the difference in how men and women are treated, we notice the inequality between us genders. In music, there is a difference in what kind of music men or women should like, they should listen to, in what kind of musical instruments should play. But there is also just statistics and what you see more of.
When it comes to music and gender and what each different gender on what kind of music they like to listen to, there is a separation. With girls the most popular singers they like to listen to are Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, One Direction, or Harry Styles, and more. Which makes sense because most of them right these catchy love songs or songs about heartbreak that we can scream in our car when we are in a bad mood. Now if a guy were to listen to these kinds of artists all the time and go to their concerts and have a whole bunch of their songs on their playlists, they would get made fun of, told they are not manly enough, or told that they must be gay. And with guys taste in music, sadly, I haven’t seen much “discrimination” or bullying in that one if a woman likes a certain kind of music that is meant for men. Maybe the main thing men listen to is rock but I have never seen or heard of women being told they can’t listen to that in my time, maybe before me but not now. So why can girls listen to anything, but guys can’t listen to certain artists or genres of music? The world will never know, there will always be inequality when it comes to honestly anything.
Now when it comes to what type of musical instruments men and women play, I believe is just because it’s a population and not discrimination. When watching most bands, orchestras, and concerts I see that most women are playing the flute, violin, or singing or playing the guitar. I see that most men are playing the trumpet, the cello, or the drums. I think that is just population and statistics and what I noticed with what genders play what instruments. I played the trumpet in middle school and part of high school. I was the only girl who played the trumpet. And then my older brother played the cello during his middle school years, but I don’t remember if I saw other girls playing cello or not.
So yes there is a bit of a difference when it comes to music and gender. Mainly when it comes to preferences but there could be a little bit of discrimination there and when I say discrimination I mean harassment for what kind of music someone likes. I say listen to what you want to listen to and play whatever kind of instrument you want.
I love your last bit and I couldn't agree more. I will never understand why people care so much whether or not a song or an instrument is for girls or for boys. Why does it even matter and what does it change?
ReplyDeleteI have seen the typical stereotype of men being called "gay" if they listened to 'un-manly' music, and I kind of find it silly that people would even judge people according to what kind of music someone listens too. I listen to all kinds of music, but that doesn't define who I am, or who anyone is. I also had played the cello in elementary, middle, and high school :) and surprisingly, there was a lot of female cellists in my schools throughout my years.
